Buying boots that fit is not complicated, but almost none of it is about the size you normally wear.

Ask what last it is built on

The last is the shaped form the boot is built around, and it decides fit far more than the stated size does.

Two boots marked the same size on different lasts fit completely differently. This is normal, and it is why measurements beat charts.

Measure your calf

Shaft height and calf circumference decide whether the boot goes on at all.

It is the measurement almost nobody is asked for, and the most common reason a perfectly fitting boot is unwearable.

Expect the heel to slip a little

A new boot should be snug across the instep with slight heel lift. The slip goes away as the sole flexes.

No slip at all when new usually means too small — and sizing down from there is how boots end up unworn.

Buy the welt if it has to last

A welted boot can be resoled several times. A cemented one is finished when the sole wears through.

Compare cost per year, not price. Sometimes the cheap boot genuinely wins — if you will wear it twice.
