Two boots, one twice the price of the other. The cheap one is not necessarily cheaper, and here is how to tell.

Find out how the sole is attached

A Goodyear welt lets the sole be removed and replaced without disturbing the upper.

A cemented sole is glued directly on. When it goes, the boot goes with it.

Count the resoles

Good uppers routinely outlast several soles. That turns one purchase into a decade.

A cemented boot gets one life, however good the leather looks in the shop.

Do the arithmetic

Divide the total cost, including resoles, by the years you will actually wear them.

That number decides it, and it frequently favours the dearer boot by a wide margin.

When the cheap boot genuinely wins

If you will wear them a handful of times, buy the cheap pair and enjoy them.

We would rather say that than sell a welted boot to somebody who will wear it twice a year.
